Henry Sands Brooks opened H. & D. H. Brooks & Co. in downtown Manhattan in 1818 at the age of 45. His four sons inherited the business in 1830, and twenty years later in 1850 rebranded the family business as “Brooks Brothers”. In the early years, they introduced the” ready to wear” suit to their American customers and this would make them very well known and popular. They have outfitted 39 of 44 presidents including Herbert Hoover, Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. As the country’s oldest clothing and accessories retailer, Brooks Brothers continues to uphold the same traditions and values as it has for nearly two centuries.
